The Story
Have you ever wondered why there's a statue of a man feeding pigs next to these car dealerships in this Washington D.C. suburb? 🤔
🧐 Don Beyer Sr., who founded these dealerships, asked his brother Richard Beyer to create this statue.
🎨 The original design? A black man and a white woman reading a newspaper on Thomas Jefferson's serpentine wall, inspired by the Supreme Court's decision to strike down Virginia's anti-interracial marriage laws in 1967. But, the message wasn’t clear enough.
🍹 So, over a bottle of Wild Turkey, the brothers got a new idea! Richard then sculpted a woman feeding pigs, just like their mom did on the Beyer’s Springhill Farm in McLean, Virginia.
🚫 But wait! Rich's wife thought it didn’t suit his mom, so he changed it to a man.
🗓️ The statue was unveiled on May 6th, 1984. It’s made of wood dipped in aluminum and cost $25,000 to build. 💸
✨ And that’s the story behind the Man Slopping Pigs!
